September 29, 2014 - Gayle's Bakery and Rosticceria - Capitola, California

Rose and I started our morning at her favorite spot.  We bought breakfast for there….and lunch to take home because Rose has a 1:00 p.m. class today.

I tried the Bacon and Scrambled Egg Croissant….great tasting scrambled eggs…fluffy…scrambled the way I like them…not too soft but still fluffy….two pieces of crisp bacon.  I always order my bacon crisp…and a huge flaky…brown croissant.

I also bought a Strawberry Shortcake Cookie…really a scone-type cookie…soft…moist…could taste the butter…and yet crumbly like a scone.  I bought a Garlic Cheese Twist for home as well as a Croissant d’ Amande…plus a Masala Chicken Salad Croissant for lunch…Masala spiced roasted chicken, slivered almonds, mayo, currants, celery, scallions, and lettuce tucked in a flaky croissant.

September 27, 2014 - Rocco's Ristorante and Pizzeria - Walnut Creek, California

Oops! I almost forgot this one - Dinner with Jim Granier and Jeanine Caron on Saturday evening.

Jim and Jeanine split the House Salad…the romaine and iceberg lettuce came loaded with kidney, cannellini and cece’ beans as well as sliced beets, dried cranberries, shredded carrots, olives and cucumbers.  I think the three of us could have easily shared the salad.  We didn’t order the Family size because it fed 5-6 people.

I ordered the 1/ 2 Caesar Salad…and it was wonderful….tangy…I could taste the anchovy….loved it. It came with the large thin slices of Parmesan Cheese…homemade croutons and the Rocco original dressing.

We ordered The Dominator (house specialty) – pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, ham,  linguica, sausage and onions…it was delicious…loaded…and no tomato sauce on this pizza…we ordered thin crust…lots of cheese.  (History tidbit:  The Dominator is named after Rocco’s youngest son, Dominic.

Jim and I each drank a Peroni beer...Jeanine chose the Heineken

Sorry...no pictures...I was so excited when the pizza arrived I forgot to take pictures.

September 28, 2014 - Phil's Fish Market and Eatery - Moss Landing, California

Rose Filicetti, Neal Savage, Matt Savage and I went to Phil’s Fish Market  in Moss Landing.  I ordered the Halibut Fish and Chips…it came with coleslaw…a huge plate of food…five large pieces of halibut….a mammoth serving of coleslaw…lots of tartar sauce and  ketchup for the chips….I loved my selection.  The pieces of halibut was served in a batter that was thick and fluffy….fried to a golden brown…that is the way I like my battered fish.  The coleslaw was served in a sweet and creamy dressing.  Neal ordered exactly what I ordered.  Rose ordered the three fish and chips…cod…shrimp and scallops.  Matt ordered Fish Tacos..and they looked good…very good.

September 28, 2014 - MoBo Sushi - Santa Cruz, California

I am visiting cousins, Rose Filicetti and Neal Savage in Capitola Beach, California.  The beach town is very close to Santa Cruz, California.

Rose and I lunched at MoBo Sushi before attending the production of Saint Joan at the Jewel Theater in Santa Cruz.

Rose ordered the Mobo Wrap – deep fried shrimp, snow crab, avocado,  and smoked  salmon wrapped in fresh cabbage.  It was served with sweet sauce, tobiko and green onion.  (there is no rice in this roll.)

I ordered the Crunch Dragon – Tempura Black Tiger shrimp, crab, cucumber and avocado in a roll covered with spicy tuna, tempura slakes, spicy mayo and sweet sauce.  I really loved my selection…a mix of spicy and sweet.  It was the best roll that I have ever tasted.

I thought the presentation was absolutely lovely.

MoBoKanji translation:

September 26, 2014 - Grenzella's - Williams, California

Olive Tasting at Granzella's in Williams, California - this could become a favorite hobby of mine.  I love olives.  Some of my favorites:

Garlic Flavored Olives

Deli Mix

Hot and Zesty Olives

Garlic Cloves

Italian Oil and Dry Olives
We ate a lot of these as kids...and I hated everyone I ate because they were so sour.  These were absolutely wonderful.

Green Olives

Spicy Greek Style Olives

Sicilian Style Olives
These were my favorite.  I bought a jar of these to take home.
(Of course, I could have bought a jar of everyone.)

Marinated Artichoke Hearts.
I know this was an olive tasting stop but I couldn't pass up tasting this or the garlic cloves.

A look at one part of the tasting bar.

I would stop here every time I passed this way.

September 26, 2014 - Pagoda Hills - Yuba City, California

Visited on September 26, 2014 with Jim Granier, Carolyn and Steve Battaini, Mike Renzullo, Jeanine Caron.  We go into this huge dining hall.  There are 8-10 food lines of buffet food. OMG!   You could find anything.

I especially liked the General Tao’s Chicken,  Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Black Pepper  Beef as well as Pepper Beef.   It was delicious.  I also liked my bowl of Hot and Sour Soup.

As far as Chinese Buffets go…this was good.  Everyone was hot that I chose.  There was also food available. Or...maybe because my fortune cookie gave me a really great fortune. I bet it was the great company that made this food taste so good.

Jim Granier's plate.  As you can see there is a wide selection of food at this buffet.  I did not try the sushi as I am darn particular about my sushi...but mostly because I was hungry and I wanted a big plate of Pepper Beef.

The restaurant is actually:

Yuba Buffet
840 Gray Ave,
Yuba City, CA 95991
(530) 671-0888

Steve Battaini calls it the Pagoda Hills (yes...from Paint Your Wagon)...and the name just sticks.  I have to admit though, Steve is pretty convincing.  As we pulled up I was looking for the Pagoda Hills.

September 24, 2014 - Lockeford Sausage Company - Burson, California

I am visiting Jimmy Granier in Concord, California.  Today we drove to Burson, California where Jimmy's pistachio farm is located.  We stopped at the Lockford Sausage Company to buy sausages for grilling at lunch.

We bought Hot Italian, Bavarian, Kielbasa, Beer links and andouille.  Jeanine also bought some  sausage sticks for a quick treat in the car…OMG…they were hardy…tasted wonderful…and no…lardy filling.

Paul Granier getting ready to dig into his Hot Italian Sausage.

I also chose the Hot Italian sausage.  It was tasty…and hearty….none of that…or at least not much of the grisly, lardy fill.  It did have a kick to it…but the Italian seasonings were perfect.  I ate it on  a soft bun.  I never put any condiments on the bun or the sausage.  I wanted to enjoy the flavor and I did.  We washed it down with beer.

September 18, 2014 - Vito's Pizza and Ristorante - Mesa, Arizona

I went to lunch at Vito's today with the Las Palmas Tag Along Lunch Crowd.

I ordered the Baked Ziti… Ziti pasta tossed in a meat red  sauce with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese…and I really liked my dish.  I just felt as if it had been left in the oven or microwave a little too long…most of the outside ziti were really hard…as in overcooked.  It was served with two slices of garlic toast cut into four pieces.

I would like to return here and try something else on the menu like the Italian Beef Sandwich.

September 8, 2014 - Monti's Las Casa Vieja Steakhouse

I visited this eatery with cousins Lance and Candace Larson.  Since it was Monday night the special was Prime Rib.  Each of us ordered the special.   It was delicious. (and I am not a prime rib lover.)  We were given two choices of side dishes so Candace and I each chose the Bake Potato and the Grilled Vegetables…both were cooked perfectly.  I am very touchy about my baked potatoes and this one was just right…came with butter and sour cream.  Our grilled vegetables included zucchini, carrots, onions.  I really liked the taste of them.  Lance ordered the Baked Potato and the Mac ‘n Cheese Chipotle.

The horseradish sauce was mild but quite tasty...not a hot, stinging after taste.

Price:  $14

I would return to this restaurant for dinner.  It's decor is all historical.  I would have liked to have spent more time looking at the decor.

Monti’s Las Casa Vieja Steakhouse
100 South Mill Avenue
Tempe, AZ 85281
Hours:  Sunday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. -  10:00 p.m.
             Friday and Saturday – 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

The history:
Monti's La Casa Vieja is located in Tempe, Arizona, in the city's original pioneer home and the oldest continuously occupied structure in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The original adobe hacienda was built as a home by Charles Trumbull Hayden in 1871. Hayden settled in the area to establish a flourmill and a ferry service for crossing the Salt River, which flowed year-round at that time.
In 1876, Hayden married Sallie Davis, and the couple turned their residence into a hotel, blacksmith shop, post office and general store. The community became known as Hayden's Ferry. The following year, the Hayden's son Carl was born in the hacienda. Carl would go on to become a sheriff, cavalry soldier and congressman, serving more than 57 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.  The Arizona Republic ranked Carl Hayden first on a list of the most important people in Arizona history.

In the late 1880s, a traveling English nobleman named Darrell Duppa suggested that the small settlement resembled an area in Greece called the Vale of Tempe. A few years later, the town's name was officially changed to Tempe.

When the Hayden family moved to a new home in the 1890s, they began referring to the original structure by the nickname La Casa Vieja -- Spanish for "The Old House." Sanborn's Insurance Company documents from this period show that a restaurant of some sort was operated at La Casa Vieja as early as the 1890s, most likely as a convenience to those who had traveled a great distance to use the flourmill or ferry service. The Hayden daughters ran the restaurant until financial difficulties forced the sale of the property in the 1930s.

During the ensuing years, several operators ran the restaurant. From the Great Depression through 1954, details about La Casa Vieja are sketchy. Mrs. Lucille Payne ran the bar and restaurant with her husband from 1943 to 1947, and has been kind enough to present us with some interesting photographs and stories. During World War II, many British military personnel that were in the Valley for training frequented the bar at La Casa Vieja. The British soldiers gave Mr. Payne a large Union Jack to mount on the wall (as seen in the photo at the right). After the Paynes departed, a couple from Alaska leased the restaurant, but there are few details about them.

In 1954, the building was purchased by Leonard F. Monti, Sr. Monti had been operating a 13-stool diner in Chandler since 1946, having come to Arizona following World War II. After waiting for the tenant's lease to expire, Monti opened his new restaurant for business in April 1956. He was keenly aware of the property's illustrious heritage, and rather than entirely renaming the establishment he merely added his last name, dubbing it "Monti's La Casa Vieja."

Monti diligently cultivated the historical aspects of La Casa Vieja, putting hundreds of pieces of memorabilia, photographs and unique objects on display throughout the restaurant. Senator Carl Hayden, late in his life, paid a number of visits to his childhood home, affording Monti an opportunity to question him about the building's intriguing history. Monti was also fortunate to meet Hayden C. Hayden, grandson of Charles Trumbull Hayden, who shared many historical anecdotes with him over decades of friendship. Today, Hayden C. Hayden remains a friend of the Monti family and a frequent customer.

In 1984, the Hayden House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The certificate for this prestigious honor can be found on the wall near the restaurant's main customer entrance. Additionally, Monti's La Casa Vieja is listed on historical registers for the State of Arizona and the City of Tempe.

Although many alterations and additions have been made to the structure over the decades, these changes have always been made to further the original function of the Hayden House as a place of comfort and hospitality. Monti's is as authentically historic as any institution to be found in the Valley of the Sun.

By concentrating on a simple formula of giving guests an outstanding meal at a great price, Leonard Monti steadily built his business into one of Arizona's premier restaurants. Today, Monti's La Casa Vieja serves approximately 500,000 customers annually.

We feel privileged to be continuing the tradition of La Casa Vieja as a place of hospitality and a landmark of Arizona history. We look forward to seeing you soon at Monti's La Casa Vieja and helping us carry on this proud tradition.

After another day of hockey playing we decided to try the Pita Jungle for dinner.  We were once again celebrating Joshua's 42nd birthday.

I ordered the Greek Salad – mixed greens topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, Kalamata olives and feta cheese.  Served with lemon vinaigrette.   Jody ordered the Falafel Salad – crispy chickpea croquettes on a bed of greens, with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, pickles, sumac and tahini sauce.  Served with two pitas.  Joshua ordered the Coucous Salad.  Judson ordered the Blue Corn Nachos – blue corn tortilla chips covered with mixed beans and melted cheese, topped with diced tomatoes, onions and cilantro with a side of Pico de Gallo and tzatziki.

They have other Mediterranean food on the menu that I would like to try.  I will be returning.

August 30, 2015 - Fiiberto's - Scottsdale, Arizona

My grandson, Judson played in a hockey Labor Day Tournament at the Arcadia Ice Rink in downtown Phoenix.  After the Saturday afternoon game we decided to celebrate my son Joshua's 42nd birthday by stopping at Filiberto's.

The dinner party included Joshua, Jody, Judson, Jonah Hayes as well as Gabe Guidie....one of Judson's teammates who was spending part of the weekend at Judson's house.

I ordered the Carnitas…came complete with a huge floor tortilla, beans, rice, guacamole and lettuce.

                                                                         Carnitas

Jody ordered the Green Chile Verde..and it was good…just a little too salty.

                                                             Green Chile Verde

Judson and Gabe ordered a Carne Asada Burrito…another one of those 2-3 pound burritos with lots of guacamole and pico de gallo.

Joshua ordered the Cerviche Tostada (and since it was only $3) he ordered two fish tacos…thinking that the tostada would be small.  Well, it wasn’t.  It was huge.  It could have been a meal all in its own. I had a bite and it was delicious…with a traditional Mexican after taste of lime.  Jonah – his usual Cheese Quesada.   Everyone left with a smile on their faces….full tummies…and some of us carrying take home boxes.
