November 13, 2021 - The Grapevine Restaurant and Bar - Scottsdale, Arizona

I visited with Peg Hartman on our visit to Old Town Scottsdale.  She ordered the Asian Salad – field greens topped with grilled chicken – six slices of white meat, cucumbers, red cabbage, tomatoes, cilantro, mint and basil over crispy noodles, soft noodles, herbs and orange sesame vinaigrette.

I ordered the Blacken Bleu Burger – Gold Canyon Signature been patty grilled with cajun spices on a brioche bun topped with blue cheese and grilled onion…delicious..and it was so tall that you couldn’t take a good bite out of it.  I ordered fries with it…and they were also delicious.

We spent the day in Old Town Scottsdale. We found no trouble parking...walked down Brown to the Old Adobe Mission - Our Lady of Perpetual Help.  Beautiful church...the first Catholic Parish in Scottsdale.

From there we walked down to the  to the Cavalliere’s Blacksmith Shop…it wasn’t open but we were able to take pictures.  I think there are times that it is open.  I have wanted to find these two sites for a long time.

Just a nice day of strolling up and down Brown.  I love peeking into all the gardens that you wouldn't noticed otherwise.  I call them the hidden gardens. I loved the one with the sculptures of the Navajo woman herding sheep.  It was a good day.

November 12, 2021 - Arriverderci Cucina Italiana - Fountain Hills, Arizona

I visited with my friend, Peg.  We were on our way to the Taliesin West for the Southwest Shakespeare Company production of From Tidwell With Love.

We started off with the hard crust bread and a dipping oil loaded with minced parsley, oregano, rosemary and basil.  It had a really fresh taste to the spices…I hope I have identified all of them correctly.

Peg ordered the Orecchiette pasta, rapini, sausage, olive oil, garlic, red chili flakes and parmesan cheese.  She worried about the flakes.  Said it was way too hot but she like the Italian sausage and the broccoli.

I ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese – it was very good especially eating it with the hard crusted baguette. The flat, wide pasta was just perfect with the delicious homemade meat sauce.  It was red sauce though and not creamy Bolognese sauce which is what I love.

(I hate this when I rotate and save.  Yet it never is placed rotated.)

The play:

November 11- 14, 2021 is the premiere of the new play From Tidwell with Love by David Barker – a professor at the School of Music, Dance and Theater  - ASU – Tempe Campus

“At a time of global racial, economic and health crises, producing enormous divisions among people, From Tidworth With Love is a new play that follows the romance of Bill Barker (a soldier in basic training near Baltimore, Maryland) and Mary Giambrone (a nursing student in Norristown, Pennsylvania) that eventually led to marriage, with World War II as the historical and aesthetic context. Bill Barker, my father, wrote hundreds of letters to Mary Giambrone, my mother, starting in September of 1941 after a blind date, continuing through Army basic training, deployment to Europe, and to the end of the war in 1945. This is a two-character romance based on the 93 letters that survived.

Ultimately From Tidworth With Love will honor Veterans of Foreign Wars, humanize the WWII experience, and educate a new generation that has little or no tangible connection to a global event in the 1940's that saved humanity from the ideologies and practices of Nazi Germany which are manifest today in racist, fascist and white supremacist groups.”   - David Barker

A superb performance by Andy Cahoon and Mary Townsend – real-life husband and wife (I thought their kisses were so real.) who were also married in the midst of global unrest, in November 2020.

We  both loved it…funny…emotional….historical.  It was after 10:00 p.m…when it ended so we didn’t stay for the Talk Back with David Barker…and I would have loved that I am sure.

October 12, 2021 - The Rokerij - Phoenix, Arizona

I  visited for the first time with Brandy Kessel.  We chose to sit out in the patio…the weather is so beautiful I like to use the patios every time it is possible…because it is impossible during the hot summer months.

We both ordered the Swordfish special..and each chose the Caesar Salad as our first course.  I chose the Butternut Squash for my vegetable with the fish…Brandy chose Carrots.  The swordfish tasted as if lightly sauteed..and served with tiny cubes of vegetables on top…it was delicious.  I love butternut squash.  I was expecting a tiny piece..or no…they served me one-half of the baked squash…it came with lots of butter and I think brown sugar.  Perfect.

October 8, 2021 - The Duce - Phoenix, Arizona

It was an interesting place.  First of all we couldn’t find a place to park plus there was a street closed.  Mike finally went in and asked. They were about to open in ten minutes even though the website said 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.

A little history - once a prohibition era-warehouse anchoring a bustling produce district by day, when the sun set the notorious neighborhood known as The Duce transform into the place to be for great food and fun.

We went in…and there was lots of old things all over the place…pretty cute and very welcoming.  It was huge. Mike and  I went into the Black Orchid Room and looked around.  Apparently there is music starting at 8:00 p.m.  I am happy that we came early. Plus there was another large room on the south side of the Black Orchid Room.

We each ordered a drink…I ordered a Bloody Mary. I watched the young lady make it but I really can’t remember what she put in it…of course there was a Bloody Mary mix and vodka, a small shot of the pickle juice….she garnished it with an olive….put a straw in it and laid a pickle slice across the top…I think maybe a kosher pickle because it was not a dill pickle.  Poured everything into a squat Mason jar.  Everything here is served in a jar.  I think because of the prohibition history.  I liked my drink..

My Bloody Mary

Mike's Margarita

I ordered the Ila’s Brisket Sliders – The Duce Favorite!  These delicious two crusty knot rolls heaped with a very good , sweet tasting brisket.  I really liked these.  I didn’t order any sides because I was saving for dessert plus everything was ala carte…

Ila's Brisket Sliders

Mike ordered the Mason Jar Prairie Pasta – Organic Prairie vodka sauce, chicken sausage and peas.

Mason Jar Prairie Pasta

Candy and Pat ordered the brisket as I did. Pat added the Homemade Baked Beans…Candy the Homemade Pickle Slaw.  Pat wasn’t crazy about her side…but Candy was happy with hers.

I was the only one to order dessert- Sour Cream Berry Pie Jar…and it was served piping hot and delicious.  I liked the fact that it wasn’t too sweet.

I really think because most of the menu is Gluten Free, Gluten Free Option, Vegetarian Option and Vegan Option that there isn’t the sugar or processed taste that we are used to eating…and so everything tastes bland to us.  I liked it…and I am happy that went there to eat.  It was one of those places that one has to experience.

At first I thought all the items were very expensive…but I walked away full…so I know that the servings were just right.

It was visited by Diners, Drive-in & Dives – the program featured one of their Warm-Ups – The Duce Mac and Cheese Muffins – baked with cheddar cheese, gruyere, goat cheese, panko and parmesan topping.   And -  Chicken Pot Pie Jar

The staff was wonderful...very friendly...very accommodating.

September 25, 2021 - Where Has All the Customer Service Gone in the Fast Food World

Last Sunday I made this very tasty Simmering Butter Chicken dish.  The sauce had a curry taste to it.  One of the disadvantages of living along is that when you make some to eat there is no one else there to eat it with you.  So you spend the whole week cleaning up that left over.  It gets pretty darn boring.  I served it over…I served it with flatbread…which I decided was my favorite.

I finished my last meal of this dish on Thursday for lunch. Well…I have been busy working.  I have been busy preparing and training to help with Bingo at the compound.  I have been busy with all the re-training, etc. at the Mesa Arts Center where I have ushered for a long time until the pandemic shut us down.

There are times that I am too tired to start cooking a meal so I will run some place for fast food.

Because a new Kentucky Fried Chicken had been built almost right next door to me (it is right on Power Road between University and Main) I ran over there to get another Classic Chicken Combo….because it is delicious and there was another $6.99 coupon for the meal in my mailbox.  Who could resist?

I tried their Classic Chicken Sandwich Combo when the new business first opened..and it was delicious. I probably have been there 3-4 times since they have opened.  I started telling everyone that theirs was the best.  Their fries were better than Burger King’s.

It was terrible…drat!  Here I thought I found a new great chicken sandwich.  It has always been one piece of chicken…a piece of breast…white meat.  This one looked as if they stuffed in several left over pieces.  It had an off color to it.  I am sure that it sat under the heating lamp for way past the time.  It should have never been served to a human being.  How do you know though until you get home?   What a disappointment!

Do I take it back?  Do I call them?  No…because the people working there don’t understand customer service.  I should have done that anyhow…but I didn’t want to get agitated because I am sure that the staff would have come off with a look that said, “What do you mean.  There is nothing wrong with this.”  Really?

Last night I worked way longer than anticipated…old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard was bare because I didn’t have the time to run to the grocery store So I decided that I would go to Burger King ( at the intersection of University and Power) and try out one of the new deals.  I would go into the store and see if I could order it on my app…to see how that works (That is another whole story).   I drove over .…went into the store.  One young lady was working the counter.  She didn’t acknowledge me…nada.  She was busy putting together an order…and I understand those who can’t chew gum and walk at the same time…there are people who can only do one thing at a time.

This little guy was also standing pretty close to me with money in his hand.  I asked him if he had ordered and he indicated that he had...but I don’t know that he did.

She is still behind the counter and walks right by us on her mission to deliver the order to a car in the parking lot…that is waiting…and I can put up with that just at least acknowledge customers waiting at the counter.  Why should I be surprised about this?  No one has ever taught these people about customer service…no one has ever taught these people about etiquette of any manner.  No one has ever taught these people that they are the first impression of the company.

Now I sit down on the bench…and the little boy is still standing there…who knows why.

Two people come in the door and are standing…in she comes..and says to them, “May I help you?”  Really?  I walked out..and the guy is saying to me, “go ahead…”  It doesn’t take him long to realize that we were also waiting.  I respond, “Why should I patronize this establishment when they don’t have a clue about customer service.”

You know I love that this new Burger King is so close to me.  I have always had a tasty meal there.  I like the little burgers…and their little burgers are way better than McDonald’s.  Their meat has always tasted good.

I have eaten many of their hand breaded Classic Chicken sandwiches.  I love it.  Before they were located close by,  I would drive to Crisman and the #60 to Popeye’s for my Chicken sandwiches…which were the best.  But now I have the best right close by.

I decided to go somewhere else and buy my meal.  I chose Rally’s…down University at Greenfield.  I had only been there once with my grandson...and it was pretty good.  That time we didn’t have any fries...and people were telling me that the fries were to die for…so I went there.  I went through the drive through because there is only outdoor dining...and I didn’t want to do that because it was getting close to 8:00 p.m.

I ordered the Baconzilla Combo – a choice of two meat patties or three…I chose two patties…it included fries and a drink.  I took my order home.  The fries were good…I liked them…but they weren’t the best fries I have ever eaten.  I must say though the worst was the taste of  the meat.  It tasted terrible.  There is nothing worse than biting into a burger and going yuck!  I won’t be returning there for a long time if ever.  Why order a burger at a burger stand…if the burger tastes terrible!

I have to ask myself…do I want to be treated like this as a customer.  No…not really!

I probably will once again make that drive to Popeye’s for my chicken sandwiches.  At this point I guess I have to stop eating burgers because I won’t put up with the help.

I did try to reach the management of the Burger King via email.  But I have not at this time heard from them.

August 31 - September 1, 2021 - Turquoise Room - Winslow, Arizona

My friend  and I went on a two day trek to the Petrified Forest National Park...Painted Desert...and Winslow, Arizona.  We stayed the night in the La Posada Hotel..which I have always wanted to do.  It was only appropriate to have dinner in the Turquoise Room...which have also always wanted to do.  It was so enjoyable we also ate breakfast their the next morning.

Dinner: We started with salads.  Cindi ordered the Ch’ishie Farms Summer Sumac in a cranberry-sumac dressing, garnished with pickled beets (which Cindi asked them to hold.), grape tomatoes, cranberries and crumbled goat cheese.

I ordered the Southwestern Caesar – Romaine tossed in a house-made Caesar dressing with roasted pumpkin seeds and Parmesan cheese.  Garnished with roasted red peppers and a Parmesan Crusted Cracker Bread.  It was delicious.  The roasted red peppers had a sweet taste.  The Cracker Bread was perfect to accompany the salad.

Entrée- we both ordered the Shrimp with Pappardelle Pasta – wild caught American Gulf shrimp tossed with fresh pappardelle pasta made by Pasta Mia, in a mild chipotle cream sauce with peppers, corn, tomatoes, asparagus and fresh cilantro.  It was served in big bowls and a large spoon.  Perfect.

Our waiter was Salvador.  He was a most wonderful waiter.  The food was delicious and the service was second to none.

The next morning here's what we had for breakfast:

Cindi ordered Mary Jane’s Omelet – fresh spinach and mushroom omelet with cheddar cheese and served with the spicy green chile breakfast potatoes. Cindi choose the blueberry muffin which she didn’t like.  She also didn’t care for the spicy green chile breakfast potatoes...but I tasted them…and I thought they were quite good.  They were like scalloped potatoes.

I ordered Warm Prickly Pear Cactus and Spice Bread Pudding – creamy bread pudding mde with almonds, pine nuts raisins, cherries, cranberries, candied peel and spice…baked and topped with prickly pear cactus syrup, whipped cream and strawberries.  It was loaded with all those goodies.  I was surprised how I was filled up so rapidly.  I loved it.  Plus the presentation was beautiful.

One doesn’t have the opportunity to order this wonderful sounding dish…so I did.  I later noticed that it was also on the dessert menu..so I am really happy to have ordered it  I was too full last night to order dessert.  Plus…this was a fun morning meal.

“A Brief History of the Turquoise Room

In 1997 Allan Affeldt & Tina Mion acquired La Posada from the Santa Fe Railway. It had been closed for forty years. From 1930 to 1957 the Fred Harvey dining room at La Posada had been the finest in the region. La Posada was gutted in 1961 and turned into regional offices for the Santa Fe Railroad. Nothing was left of the once fabulous interiors designed by Mary Colter. Allan and Tina wanted to bring fine dining back to the grand hotel, but nobody thought it was possible.

Allan & Tina convinced their old friend John Sharpe to take on the project. John was one of the most famous restaurateurs in Southern California, with fancy restaurants all over Orange County. It took three years for them to design and renovate the old dining and kitchen spaces and they reopened in 2000. But what would they call the restaurant?

The Super Chief was the deluxe train between Los Angeles and Chicago. It was called ‘the train of the stars’ because of all the rich and famous guests. The Santa Fe Railway commissioned their first dome cars – six ‘Pleasure Domes’ – for Super Chief. All were built in 1950 by the Pullman Standard Company and were among the most expensive railcars ever built. They were each named Plaza something: Plaza Santa Fe, Plaza Lamy – and were numbered 500, 501 etc. Each one had an upper dome lounge over the center, a starlight lounge forward (the ceiling panels were perforated so when lit it looked like starry heavens), a step-down bar, and a private dining room called ‘The Turquoise Room’. The Pleasure Domes would be next to the dining car and used the same kitchen. The Turquoise Room was by reservation only and was advertised as the finest dining on wheels. The lavish interiors were designed by Mary Colter. Colter also designed the beautiful ‘Mimbreno Ware’ china pattern exclusively for the Turquoise Rooms. The china was Colter’s deco interpretation of classic Mimbres pottery. The Pleasure Domes were in Santa Fe operation 1950 -1971, then AMTRAK until 1980, and then sold to private owners. Allan named the new restaurant The Turquoise Room as an homage to Mary Colter and the Fred Harvey Company. At the time Allan did not know that any of the original Pleasure Domes survived.

In 2016 the Winslow Arts Trust found and acquired the #502 ‘Plaza Lamy’ Pleasure Dome and moved it to La Posada for restoration. You can see it just east of the depot museum. Since then we have acquired a number of original pieces of Pleasure Dome furniture, which will be on display when the beautiful railcar is once again open to the traveling public.

La Posada and the Turquoise Room quickly built a reputation as the finest historic hotel and restaurant on Route 66, and among the finest boutique hotels and restaurants in the Southwest. John Sharpe was twice nominated for a James Beard award as best chef in the Southwest for his unique interpretation of regional and railroad classics, from Hopi Piki Bread and Navajo Churro lamb to Fred Harvey Boilerman breakfasts. After working together for twenty years John retired in 2020 but all of the Turquoise Room team stayed, from management to the kitchen crew. The legacy of improbably fine dining in the high desert continues. Thanks for being our guest!”

August 26, 2021 - Aunt Chiladas Squaw Peak - Phoenix, Arizona

I visited with one of my ushering friends, Cindi.

Our chips and salsa were delicious.  I love the big fried flour tortilla chips that were served with a very hearty salsa.

Chips

Salsa

Cindi ordered the Seafood Enchiladas – two enchiladas filled with seasoned shrimp, scallops…covered with a Mexican cheese sauce.

Seafood Enchilada

I ordered the Super Taquitos – three long-rolled machaca tacos, with sour cream and cotija cheese.  Served with guacamole and a green chili sauce.

Super Taquitos

Both meals were served with rice and beans.

Dessert:  Tres Leche Cake…a huge piece that was moist and delicious....with whipped cream and a strawberry on top.   It was served with ice cream and sauce.   I really like it.   "Three milks cake" in Spanish.  I have made this cake many times.  It is very easy to make.

Tres Leche Cake

I enjoyed my meal because I haven’t had this type of taquito in years.  They reminded me of the taquitos we always ordered at Juanita’s on Olvera Street in Los Angeles in the late 60s and early 70s.

The food wasn’t great Mexican food but I enjoyed the building’s history and the comfortable setting.

 History of the building:

“In the early 1890s, shortly after the reluctant surrender of Geronimo in Skeleton Canyon, Arizona was still an untamed territory and what is now Aunt Chiladas Dining Room was the general store for the laborers who worked the Rio Rico Mines. The mines, quite unintentionally, gave this area its name. The men would emerge from a long day in the mines somewhat intoxicated and dreamy-eyed from the Mercury fumes. And as they walked the road to the general store, people were heard to remark, ‘The men are back from The Dreamy Draw.’ ”

July 31, 2021 - Com Tam Thuan Kieu - Mesa, Arizona

After a morning bridge session in Sun Lakes, Cathy, Tor and I drove the Asian District in Mesa.  We ended up at the Mekong Plaza.  We were looking for this one dish that Cathy loves.  She thought it was Vietnamese.  The first restaurant we walked into had what she wanted.  She was a very happy girl.

Tor and I ordered the Bun Tu Chon Thit, Bo, HOAC GA – I chose grilled sliced beef with rice vermicelli – delicious – I poured all my fish sauce over everything -perfect.  Under the vermicelli were fresh cubed cucumbers and carrots.

There was also an eggroll cut in four pieces on the top of the dish.  Mine was a shrimp eggroll.  I loved my dish.

Tor had exactly what I had except he chose chicken for his meat.

This is what Tor and I ordered.

Cathy ordered the Bun Cha Gio Tom Tu Chon Bo, Thit, HOAC GA Nu Ong.  Her meat choice was the grilled sliced beef…and her dish came with a Chicken Eggroll.

June 12, 2021 - Keegan's Grill - Chandler, Arizona

I visited with Cathy Lindholm, Tor Thorsen, Eileen and Jim Utter after our Saturday morning bridge game in Sun Lakes.

Cathy ordered the Baked Four Onion Soup – Jarlsberg Cheese, fresh croutons, pecorino romano.

Jim – Artisan French Dip – roast beef on toasted French roll, homemade au jus and atomic horseradish sour cream.

Eileen – Calihan Cobb salad (small portion which was huge.) grilled tenderloin , chicken, red onion, avaocado, tomato, egg, gorgonzola, bacon tossed with blue cheese dressing.  (I want to return and order this salad.  It looked fresh and delicious.)

Tor – Son MOAB – burger with double Pepperjack cheese, Cajun caramelized onions, Dijon ailoi, lettuce, tomato, pickle on an onion knot bun.

I ordered the Taproom Steak Sandwich – open face, char crusted tenderloin medallion, caper garlic baguette, tomatoes with gorganzola sauce.  The meat was grilled perfectly…it was tender and very tasty.  I loved it…I also loved the tomatoes with sauce.  It added a little zing to the steak.  I would order this again…if I only lived closer I would visit on a Saturday night for dinner when I was hungry for a steak.  Actually, I would order any of the meals that each of ordered again.

Cathy chose the Carbonara with chicken special…and Tor and I split one of the specials a 20 oz. steak with caramelized onion in a pinot  noir   sauce…grilled asparagus…and these baked season potato chunks…the meat was tender and  delicious. We were happy that we shared. We each took a box home with us…so there were four meals there.  Tor also ordered the Creamy Corn Chowder…and it was very tasty.

June 9, 2021 - Nunthaporn Thai Cuisine - Mesa, Arizona

My fellow usher and friend, Cindi and I went to downtown Mesa because we had to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background check before we are able to usher again at the Mesa Arts Cents.  We decided to have lunch at the Thai restaurant because we have never eaten there before now and we have heard for a long time about how good it is. (And…it is!)

Cindi ordered the Pad Thai – stir fried Thai noodles with choice of protein…Cindi chose shrimp, egg, minced red onions, sweet radishes, Chinese chive, beans sprouts in old style Pad Thai sauce. (It looked delicious)

I chose the Masaman Curry – moderately spiced with a sweet flavor but the tastes of the spices dominate.  It also had a sour taste from the tamarind.  The curry sauce was slowly cooked in coconut milk with your choice of protein…I also chose shrimp…potatoes and roasted peanuts.  They served brown rice with my curry…and it was fabulous…I ate everything but some of the potatoes which were pretty darn hard.
