November 8, 2019 - Two Hippies Beach House - Phoenix, Arizona

After I spent the morning with Carol and Mike Thompson touring the Phoenix Indian School, we decided to try this interesting fast food restaurant.  We heard that the tacos were great!

I ordered one Carne Asada Taco and one Green Chili Beef Taco..plus a bag of homemade chips with green sauce..Carol ordered two Chicken Tacos…Mike ordered a Green Chili Beef Burrito…a bag of homemade chips with red sauce.

Mike found us a table around back in a covered eating area while we waited in line to order our food and there was a line.  I don’t think I would have ever had found it if I had come alone.

My meal was delicious….

The tacos were huge and very inexpensive.  You know the food is good when a long line is constantly streaming through the ordering area.

November 3, 2019 - Fitz's Cafe - Queen Valley, Arizona

After spending the morning and early afternoon at the 13th Annual Artists Studio Tour,,,hosted by Artists of the Superstitions…in Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, Carol and Mike Thompson and I  decided to take a drive to Queen Valley for lunch.  This was our first visit and we thought the city and area was wonderful.

We chose to stop at Fitz's Cafe for lunch.  I ordered the Patty Melt…and it was served on marble rye bread with grilled onions and Swiss Cheese…and Fries.  It was a great sandwich…it is going to make my Patty Melt list.

October 27, 2019 - Nori Sushi - Scottsdale, Arizona

I visited with Joshua, Jody and Jonah Hayes as well as Jack and Judy Svendsen between hockey games.

Appetizers – Edamame…delicious

I ordered the  Crunch Roll – tempura shrimp, seaweed, rice, avocado, cucumber and Japanese mayo..delicious.  Plus Coconut Shrimp – four large black tiger shrimp on a a skewer.  It was like they had been pounded flat once on the skewer…fried on panko…served with the best sauce.  The presentation was beautiful..and the taste was delicious.  I tried the “helper” like chop sticks and they worked but it is difficult to eat with them.  I kept dropping everything on me…and my napkin kept sliding off my lap.

Joshua, Jody and Judy ordered the Jjam-Pong…a seafood noodle bowl…huge bowl served like soup…looked delicious…but I don’t  think I would eat the oysters…

Jonah had the chicken pot stickers…I think also called gizo…and then he and Jack ordered the Chicken Teriyaki which looked delicious.  It was served with rice and mashed potatoes…there was a long discussion of whether they could be mashed potatoes…we finally asked…and yup..mashed potatoes.

October 18, 2019 - Raven Gastropub - Scottsdale, Arizona

I visited with Carol Thompson after a doctor apppointment in North Scottsdale.

We sat out on the patio…for the first time this season…Carol ordered 1/ 2  Roasted Turkey and Apple Brie Sandwich – toasted sourdough, slice turkey with melted brie, green apple slices, candied bacon and sundried tomato aioli…served with Sweet Potato Fries…now I should have done that but no…I ordered the Raven Burger – housemade bourbon glaze, candied bacon, crumbled bleu cheese, crispy fried onions and fried pickles.  It was delicious but huge…and very messy.

October 6, 2019 - 18-Degrees - Scottsdale, Arizona

I visited  with Jody Hayes and Jonah Hayes where we enjoyed dinner between Jonah’s hockey game and Judson’s hockey game.  I ordered the Steakhouse Burger… it was delicious but never again…it is just too big to eat…and by that I mean two things…first too much…and second you can’t get a vertical bite into the burger…I just hate that.  I do not like eating my burger with a fork and knife.  Jody had the Asian BBQ tacos…and I think if I eat there again I am trying the tacos…what I really didn’t like about this restaurant was their website with no menu dropdown…instead in order to get the menu…one had to sign up for the sports platform which I am not doing.

September 28, 2019 - Lotus Garden - Apache Junction, Arizona

I visited with Carol and Mike Thompson for lunch.  I ordered the Mongolian Beef Lunch Special…and chose the hot and sour soup…they gave us a vegetable spring roll…this is was really good… better than Happy Kitchen and Green Tea…but I still think I liked the hot and sour soup better at Green Tea…but it still doesn’t beat the Grace Garden for the Mongolian Beef…

Carol ordered the Chicken Curry and was very happy with her entrée except she thought there were too many green and red peppers in the entrée.

September 21, 2019 - Green Tea Chinese Restaurant - Mesa, Arizona

I went to lunch here with my grandson, Jonah Hayes, after an early morning at the Bye Bye Buzzards event at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.  Jonah ordered the Orange Chicken and I ordered the Mongolian Beef.  It was the lunch special for about $5.75/each..not bad…it came with a drink or soup…so Jonah’s lemonade went as the drink…and I ordered the Hot and Sour Soup..which I thought was way better than the soup we had at Happy Kitchen.  Jonah’s Orange Chicken was really good. My Mongolian Beef was okay but not the best…can’t beat the Mongolian Beef at Grace Garden…

September 20, 2019 - LAMP Pizzeria - Scottsdale, Arizona

Carol Thompson and I stopped for lunch after our doctor appointments in North Scottsdale.  I had suggested that we try LAMP Pizzeria.

I ordered the Mignulata…this was made from the regular pizza dough – which is cold-proofed for 4-5 days and returned to room temperature…that is rolled into a rectangular sheet…the dough is brushed with olive oil and showered with lots of freshly cracked black pepper..the filling is then added to the rectangular….a healthy dose of grated pecorino cheese..and Lamp’s house sausage – a fragrant intense pork sausage that’s flavored with things including chianti, sambuca, allspice and fennel.  Blanched cauliflower florets and onions.  The onions are shaved very thinly. The mignulata is rolled out like a jelly roll…creating a thick log aa couple of feet long.  That is egg washed…and is popped into the wood oven…when it is finished baking it it cut crosswise into thick slices.  It is then basted with a little more olive oil….and it goes back in the wood oven on a hot meta plate for just a few minutes to give the edges a sizzling brown crunch…just before it is served a little more olive oil is drizzled on the mignulata slices…followed by a dusting of pecorino cheese.

This time I just had it plain…next time I am adding Calabrian chile oil.

Mignulata

Carol ordered the White Pizza with fresh Mozzarella, Pecorino, EEVOO, Sea Salt…no Cracked Black Pepper for her…but she wanted Garlic on it and Parmigian-Reggiano Cheese…it was delicious…wood oven baked…crust was excellent.

September 8, 2019 - The Gilbert House - Gilbert, Arizona

I visited on September 8, 2019 with  nieces Sumer Buening and Mary Ellen Hayes. I ordered the Two Egg Breakfast…I ordered scrambled eggs, crispy hashbrowns, crispy bacon and it was served whole-grain toast…I guess there was no choice.  It was very good…and everything was served just as I ordered.  The wait staff was very good.

Sumer ordered the Healthy Scramble – two eggs, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach, served with seasonal fruit, whole-grain toast.  She also added an order of biscuits and gravy.  It all looked delicious.

Mary Ellen ordered a Fruited Spinach Salad with chicken breast added – organic baby spinach, fresh fruit and candied walnuts, tossed in apple cider poppyseed dressing – served with a homemade muffin.

The service was excellent.

August 31, 2019 - Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar - Scottsdale, Arizona

I vsited with  Kitty Williams, Carol and Mike Thompson.  This was my first visit ever.  I didn’t even know there was a restaurant in the Tommy Bahama store in Kierlan Commons.

Started with drinks – Carol ordered the Pain Chiller – pineapple, orange, cream of coconut, nutmeg.  Mike ordered the Painkiller #2 which was exactly like Carol’s only with Pusser’s.  Kitty ordered Lemonade…and I ordered the Breakfast Bloody Mary – served with two small pieces of pecan bacon, a small biscuit and a small hard boiled egg!  I loved it…especially the presentation.

Breakfast Blood Mary

Starters:  Kitty and I ordered the Lump Blue Crab Bisque – in a broth of sherry and cream, topped with Herb Crushed Croutons.  Delicious!  I loved it.  Next time I am just going to order a big bowl of this.

Carol and Mike shared the World Famous Coconut Shrimp served with a Papya-Mango Chutney and cole slaw.

We were served a small pan of bread that broke into four pieces…hot from the oven…steaming when we pulled them apart…and served with a cinnamon maple type of butter.  Just delicious!

Entrées:  Kitty and I each ordered the Crispy Cod Sandwich – beer battered cod with Honey roasted Onion, Island Tarter Sauce and Fries.  It was a huge piece of thick cod which was moist inside and crispy on the outside..served in this great bun with the caramelized onions (sweet), slices of dill pickle, lettuce and tomato.  It was huge. Both Kitty and I brought half home each in a box.

Crispy Cod Sandwich

Mike and Carol shared the Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich – topped with Monterey Jack, Garlic Aioli, Jerk Sauce and Crispy Onions…served with Jerk Yucca Fries.

Kitty brought home a piece of their famous Pina Colada Cake – four layers with a fluffy frosting and topped with toasted coconut.  (My Mother always used toasted coconut..and I haven’t eaten any since she died.  I was in seventh heaven.)

August 17, 2019 - Happy Kitchen Chinese Restaurant - Mesa, Arizona

I met Carol and Mike Thompson at this restaurant for lunch.  It was a first visit for all of us.

I ordered General TSO’s Chicken – it was nice and hot…crisp…tasted great…for lunch that includes Hot & Sour Soup which I thought tasted good…it also included a spring roll – too mushy…a crab roll which tasted okay…and fried rice.

Mike ordered the Mongolian Beef – which he said that he liked…his also came with the soup…spring roll..crab roll..and fried rice.

Carol ordered the Sizzling Rice Chicken – white meat chicken cooked with Chinese vegetables in a brown sauce, served on top of sizzling rice cracker….she thought it was okay but wouldn’t order it again.

August 1, 2019 - Angry Crab Shack

I went by myself for lunch.  I ordered the Double Crab Rolls…and they were delicious…served with the Cajun Fries…where a portion of the charge goes to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  I thought the Cajun Fries were too hot spicy….but I was happy…it would be fun to return and try something different.

July 20, 2019 - Cedar Ridge Restaurant - Payson, Arizona

I visited on July 20, 2019 with the group of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum Book Club when we attended the Payson Book Festival which was held in the Ballroom of Mataztal Casino.

I ordered the Patty Melt during lunch.  It was a great tasting 1/ 2 pound burger topped with grilled onions and Swiss  Cheese between pieces of grilled marbled rye bread.  The meat was delicious.  I never asked but I would bet that the patties was home made.  This is one of the best Patty Melts I have ever eaten.  I keep a record of the best Patty Melts I have ever eaten.  This one zoomed right to second place.  If I ever return and it is this good I am going to ask to speak to the chef. If the meat is ground daily on site…this will be #1.

The burger was served with my choice of side:  French Fries…and they were also delicious.

July 11, 2019 - Bavarian Point Restaurant - Mesa, Arizona

I visited on July 11, 2019 with Sandy Wilts.  We went with the Tag-A-Long Lunch Group from Las Palmas.  We sat with Donna Honeyman and Don Lennon.

I ordered the Jagerschnitzel – pork filet in a Mushroom Cream Sauce, served with Spatzles…I substituted the German Fries.  I am happy to have done that because they are fried potato slices and I could mash them into my sauce…

Jagerschnitzel

Donna ordered the Wienerschnitzel – breaded port cutlet served with German Fries.

Wienerschnitzel

Sandy ordered the Schweinebraten – pork roast served with a dumpling and vegetables.

Schweinebraten

Don ordered the Forsterkotelett – sautee pork chops covered with portobellos and mushrooms…served with herb potatoes, bacon beans and applesauce.

Forsterkotelett

For dessert we shared a piece of Apple Strudel.  It was served in this rum based sauce…very tasty.

Apple Strudel

Everything tasted good but it was not my favorite.  I prefer the food at Zur Kate which is just down a few doors from the Bavarian Point Restaurant.  The décor and atmosphere was very nice.  The wait staff was very attentive.  I probably would not return here for a meal when I can go to Zur Kate.

June 8, 2019 - Pecan Grill and Brewery - Las Cruces, New Mexico

Wow!  I almost forgot this restaurant where we ate our Saturday dinner on my weekend trip to New Mexico to Cindi Walcott.

We both ordered the Rib Eye Steak with a Loaded Baked Potato and Grilled Asparagus…they don’t serve any margaritas frozen so I didn’t order one…instead I ordered a small House Salad – Iceberg lettuce, topped with tomatoes, white cheddar cheese, cucumbers and candied pecans…of course.  I thought all of it was pretty darn delicious.

Nothing like comfort food.

June 24, 2019 - Hula's - Phoenix, Arizona

I visited this restaurant for the first time with Kelli Jo. Welk.  I ordered the Modern Tiki Fish Sandwich – blackened hapu, taco slaw, sun-dried tomato pesto aioli.  I substituted for a Caesar Salad.  Everything tasted very good and it was quite filling…the orders are large…the bun on my sandwich was very soft..the sandwich was quite messy because of the taco slaw which was served on top of the hapu.

Kelli Jo ordered a Spicy Thai Chicken Bowl..and it looked delicious – boneless chicken breast spicy thai sauce avocado, fried sweet plantains.

June 7, 2019 - Las Posta de Mesilla - Mesilla, New Mexico

I visited on July 7, 2019  with Cindi Walcott.  I ordered the Combination Plate #2 - Rolled red enchilada, red chile con carne, two rolled tacos, frijoles, rice and Mexican slaw.  Plus I needed a drink and I ordered the La Posta Rita – their classic house margarita served salted in a grande mug – frozen – tequila, limes and Good Times!

Combination Plate #2

Cindi ordered the Shrimp and Chicken Fajita -  marinated shrimp and chicken on a sizzling skillet of grilled onions, red and green bell peppers and tender green chile strips.  Served with fresh guacamole, rice, refitos and side of sour cream, pico de gallo, Cheddar cheese and three flour tortillas.   I rated the food good but what moved the meter was the presentation of Cindi’s entrée…plus I loved the history of the site.

             Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.
             Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The History is taken from their website.  They know it best:

“Earliest records indicate the La Posta Compound was originally constructed in the 1840's. Sam Bean and his brother Roy Bean, operated a freight and passenger service line to Pinos Altos from this building in the 1850's.

After the Civil War, The La Posta Compound became an important stop on the Butterfield Stagecoach Line. During the 1870's and 1880's, the Corn Exchange Hotel, one of the finest lodges in the Southwest, operated from the building. John Davis, the proprietor of the hotel, died in the late 1870's, however, his wife Augustina continued to operate the hotel, a restaurant and other businesses in the building until the early 1900's.

La Posta de Mesilla Restaurant originated in the northwest corner of the building in 1939 by Katy Griggs Camunez. The business has grown to become one of the most famous restaurants in the Southwest, occupying over 17,000 square feet of the “Compound” which now includes several shops, more private dining options, two Cantinas and a beautiful courtyard with outdoor seating year round.

After Katy passed away, the property and business was acquired by her great niece, Jerean Camunez Hutchinson, and her husband Tom, a.k.a. "Hutch", who continue to offer the same quality Mexican food and great service in the unique dining environment Katy created. The
restaurant offers many fine traditional "New Mexico" Mexican dishes make from century-old recipes handed down over the years from the Fountain, Chavez and Griggs families.

One of our most famous dishes, the "Tostada Compuesta", originated at La Posta in 1939. This dish consists of a toasted corn tortilla cup filled with frijoles, red chile con carne or green chile chicken, topped with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes (or substitute the garnish with our famous La Posta Mexican Slaw) and grated cheddar cheese. If you prefer green chile, the "Locals" favorite is the sour cream enchilada. This dish consists of corn tortillas smothered with green chile sauce (hot or mild), topped with grated cheddar cheese or Monterrey Jack cheese and sour cream, and includes refritos, rice and our very tasty Mexican slaw.

Other La Posta favorites include our La Posta Fajitas (beef, chicken, and/or shrimp), carne adovado, compuesta/fajita salads, red and green enchiladas, folded and rolled tacos, beef or chicken flautas, our tasty chile rellenos, as well as a wonderful selection of desserts including our very delicious homemade flan, empanadas, and fried ice cream. Perhaps one of our best kept secrets is our tasty, succulent steaks and green chile cheeseburger!!!…and of course, a visit to La Posta is not complete without tasting one of our award winning margaritas or sampling tequila from one of the Southwest’s largest tequila collections!”

June 7, 2019 - Sparky's - Hatch, New Mexico

I visited this unique restaurat in Hatch during my trip to the southwestern section of New Mexico with Cindi Walcott.

I was so full (from breakfast)  I ordered a Green Chile (fresh Hatch chiles) Chocolate milkshake.  I thought it was really delicious in comparison to the image I had in my mind. In fact the cold and the chocolate really did tamp down the hot…hot of the chiles.

Cindi ordered a pulled pork sandwich with fries and a root beer float.

The pulled pork was like big hunks of ham…very tasty.  I really liked this sandwich. The shake had big hunks of chiles in it.  The fries had a chile salt on them…I ate some but they were just too hot!

If you don’t go for the food…go to have a look at Teako’s Giants…he has a huge collection of giant statues.  But have something to eat.  You can’t go to Hatch without eating something with the famous Hatch Chiles in the item you order.

June 6, 2019 - McAlister’s Deli - Las Crusces, New Mexico

I visited on June 6, 2019 with Cindi Walcott.  It was late.  We had just arrived in Las Cruces…had checked into our motel.  All we wanted to do was eat something.  This restaurant was recommended to us by the clerk at the motel.  It was close by.

I ordered the 1/ 2 Four Cheese Grilled Sandwich and 1/ 2 cup of Tomato Bisque.  It was nothing special but it hit the spot.  I was happy with my meal.

I visited  with Cindi Walcott.  We were headed to the Southwest corner of New Mexico for the weekend. I ordered the Patty Melt…it was perfect…grilled onions, Swiss Cheese on Marbled Rye bread.  The bread was fabulous…very thick patty and it was cooked well…no pink!  Just the way I like it.

Cindi ordered the Mushroom Burger…it was huge but looked very good almost too high to have a good bite.   Both were served with fries.

I loved this starter.
